Women Victims of Violence in Thessaloniki

After having outlined the profile of women that are victims of violence, the president of the Association of Social Exclusion and Mental Health (ASEMH) Chrisanthi Zafiratou reported that they are mostly highschool graduates of the average ages of 40-45 years old. “These women suffer violence either physical or mental and emotional or economical and social”, stated Mrs. Zafiratou in AMNA, during an informative campaign with the motto ‘Active against Violence’.

Every year 100 to 150 women who are victims of violence in Thessaloniki seek refuge to the Center of Social Support of Women of the Association of Social Exclusion and Mental Health (ASEMH). According to Mrs. Zafiratou, from 1998 to today 2,780 people on the whole have sought refuge to the Center of Social Support, half of which are women-victims of violence.

In fact, she mentioned two extreme examples: one of a 50-year-old court clerk, whose husband attempted to create an accident while she was driving on the highway, and the other one of a woman whose armed husband chased her in the neighborhood and the woman managed to escape only because the neighbors disarmed him.
