Vatopedi Monastery Trial Begins

The trial will be free from any political ‘colours’, since no political figure is going to answer for the sell out of Greek state’s realty-prime real estate in the area of the monastery.

Those charged of criminal acts are Vatopedi Monastery Abbot Ephraim, monk Arsenios, notary Aikaterini Peleki (George Vulgaraki’s wife), attorneys Dionysis and Dimitrios Pelekis, former head of the Hellenic Public Real Estate Company (KED) Professor Petros Papageorgiou, KED board member Constantinos Gratsios and the former director of KED’s real estate management service Georgios Mitropoulos.

Also indicted is former Agriculture Ministry secretary general Constantinos Skiadas and former head of Rural Development Ministry Stamatoula Madeli. Furthermore, for the same case are indicted: former and present executives of Legal Council of State (LCS), such as former LCS vice president Grigoris Krombas, former consultant Christodoulos Botsios, as well as LCS members Stefanos Detsis and Ioannis Dionysopoulos. Ioannis Aggelou, director of office for the former Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis, who had been accused of having critically manipulated the case, was acquitted under a specific indictment of the Judicial Council.

The charges that have been brought against them include, as appropriate, morally or otherwise instigating acts of breach of trust and issuing false certificates in connection with transactions swapping real estate in Lake Vistonida and its shores with prime real estate belonging to the Greek state.
