Trial of ‘Fixed Prepayment’ suspended for the Fourth Time

The Three Member Felonies Appellate Court of Thessaloniki postponed the hearing of the case due to lapse of period until 28 September, given the fixed decision of the Plenary of Bar Associations in Greece not to attend Felonies Appellate Courts the third day of the session, unless the trial has already begun the two previous days.

That was the fourth time this particular case has been postponed (the previous three were successively in December 2013, March 2014 and November 2014); some of the active civil servants, who had been laid off on account of their involvement, reacted.

The former mayor Vasilis Papageorgopoulos did not appear before the court and was represented by his lawyers. On the contrary, M. Lemousias attended the hearing. Both of them are serving prison sentences of many years for embezzling 17.9 million euros from the municipal funds and remain imprisoned in Diavata prison.

As far as the other political figures are concerned, they are the former vice-presidents of finances Anastasios Yeroyannis, Theodoros Athanasaros and Michalis Zorpidis, who were acquitted at first instance for the embezzlement case. Among the charges attributed to those involved are those of disloyalty, fraud, altered certificate and forgery.
