Still prisoners even though they have served their sentence

The correctional employees of Patra live in a state of constant worry, ever since a 42-year-old colleague of theirs was attacked by a 33-year-old desperate and furious Ruanda resident, who is still held as a ‘guest’ in the prison of Saint Stefanos, even though he has served his sentence.

The fact that the correctional employee got away with minor injuries was purely a matter of coolheaded handling. A total number of 60 foreigners remain imprisoned, even though they have served their sentence, because they simply cannot be deported. And the reason why is that they come from countries that are in a state of war. They are arrested and sentenced; they serve their sentences, but then held as ‘guests’, piled up; they despair, they are exasperated, they explode.

The Bar Association of Patra has also intervened in the matter, whereas the First Vice-President of the Association Takis Papadopoulos and a member of the Board of Directors Panagiotis Metaxas have visited the prisons. Most of the prisoners remain there because the court had decided to deport them. If the court decides to keep them in the country, then they can be released.
